SUPA began the first Autism Skateboard Day (SK8 Day) in British Columbia for children and families living with Autism in spring 2015. Today, the event has grown and is held annually at new Pacific Autism Family Network Centre in Richmond, BC. This event empowers children living with Autism and their siblings to learn to skateboard in a supported and inclusive environment. With 1:1 skateboard lessons by professional skateboarders, the children are treated to skateboard demonstrations, lunch, bouncy castles, face painting and balloon art.
Autism SK8 Day is open to children ages 5 to 17 years old with an Autism diagnosis and their siblings. It’s is a free one day event full of fun, sunshine and skateboarding in an inclusive environment for children and families living with Autism. Applications are submitted online from our Forms page. Please note applications are currently accepted only from families in Canada.
The event is open to registered participants only. Each child with Autism receive a support team which consists of a Autism specialist and a skate instructor. The day is catered to each child with ASD. A profile form of the child is asked to be provided by each parent to briefly explain the kids strength and where they can be helped and support in. The Autism specialist is given this by our BCBA Consultant and briefed with the skate instructor to best support their kiddo they will be giving the lesson to. The ASD Specialist helps the child transition to the instructor helping along the way where it is needed.
